Unmumsy Mum Book Review – 5 STARS

Unmumsy Mum Book Review

My unmumsy mum book review? In two words, LOVED IT!

Sarah Turner’s honest and down-to-earth parenting confessions are perfect for any 20-30 something mum struggling to adjust to motherhood. Which is basically every 20-30 something mum.

And oh my word, if you have kids you will relate to this book.

Yes, I TOO feel guilty about neglecting my second child, who is frankly lucky I got around to picking up her birth certificate, let alone putting her picture on the fridge.

I TOO have whispered arguments with my partner late at night, when one of the kids wakes up …

‘Will you go?’

It’s your turn.’

‘I always go.’

‘You don’t. I went last time. Anyway, it’s you she wants.’

‘She always wants me! I never get a break!’

‘I cooked the dinner and loaded the dishwasher and sterilised all the bottles and made you cup of tea tonight.’

‘I BREASTFED FOR A YEAR, IT’S YOUR BLOODY TURN!’

And most of all, I too have STRUGGLED at being a mum, SO much more than I ever imagined. I used to be good at things. Well … some things. Now I have to do things I’m rubbish at EVERY day.

Everything I load into the dishwasher comes out covered in weird, grey Wheatabix smatter (especially odd, since we don’t eat Wheatabix).

The kid’s clothes, bought in happy, childlike colours with bright-white piping around the sleeves, are now universally a faded-shade of grey-pink

And I’m not patient enough to play kids’ games for hours on end. I get bored. After five minutes.

Sorry, I’m digressing. Back to the Unmumsy Mum Book review …

They say that behind every successful book is an author who did a brave thing. Well, Sarah Turner has got to be one of the bravest writers going. To share her deepest, darkest thoughts about parenting – live in her blog, and then in a book – is hugely admirable and courageous.

Not many mothers would admit calling their kids ‘little twats’ via text message to their partner. Or, late at night, Googling, ‘I want my old life back’.

I hope I’m not making this book sound depressing. It isn’t at all, it’s just very, very honest, and almost all mothers will recognise themselves and think, thank god it’s not just me.

I’ve been Twitter sharing the Unmumsy Mum’s blog for ages now, and have long awaited the book version. Let me tell you – it was worth the wait. Utterly fantastic.
