If you've got a Kindle Unlimited subscription and you love murder mystery books, you are having a very good time right now.
The range of brilliant British murder mystery authors on Kindle Unlimited at the moment is genuinely wonderful. Here are the ones worth knowing - the writers whose books reliably top book club lists and have you reading at 2am when you absolutely should not be.
M.C. Beaton
[ADD IMAGE HERE: Hamish Macbeth or Agatha Raisin book cover. Alt text: 'M.C. Beaton murder mystery books - Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series on Kindle Unlimited']
The queen of British cosy murder mystery. Full stop.
M.C. Beaton created two of the most beloved series in the genre - Hamish Macbeth (lazy Scottish policeman, lovely) and Agatha Raisin (difficult Cotswolds incomer, also lovely, in her own way). She sadly passed away in 2019 but left behind an enormous backlist that will keep you reading for a very long time.
Much of it is on Kindle Unlimited. Which is a gift, really.
Best for: Readers who want warm, funny British village mysteries with proper characters at the centre.
Ann Cleeves
[ADD IMAGE HERE: Vera book cover. Alt text: 'Ann Cleeves Vera murder mystery series - atmospheric book club books on Kindle Unlimited']
Ann Cleeves created Vera Stanhope and Jimmy Perez (of Shetland), which means she is responsible for two of the best detective characters in modern British crime fiction. Her books have more atmosphere and darkness than the cosy end of the spectrum, but they're brilliantly written and the sense of place is extraordinary.
Northumberland in the Vera books feels like a character in itself. Worth reading just for that.
Best for: Readers who want something moodier with a strong sense of place and a seriously flawed detective.
Suzy K Quinn (that's me)
[ADD IMAGE HERE: Suzy K Quinn author headshot. Alt text: 'Suzy K Quinn - British murder mystery and book club books author on Kindle Unlimited']
Hello! I write the Bob and Shirley murder mystery series, set in the fictional English village of Great Oakley.
Bob and Shirley are pub landlords who keep finding dead bodies and arguing about whose fault it is. The books are written in alternating first-person - so you get Bob's version of events, then Shirley's, which is usually quite different. It makes for brilliant book club reading because you end up taking sides.
All the Bob and Shirley books are free on Kindle Unlimited, which I'm told is very convenient.
Best for: Readers who want British village murder mystery with a lot of humour and a lot of heart. Also readers who enjoy a good bicker.
Faith Martin
[ADD IMAGE HERE: Faith Martin book cover. Alt text: 'Faith Martin murder mystery books - book club reads on Kindle Unlimited']
Faith Martin writes the Hillary Greene series, set in the Oxfordshire countryside and following a police detective who is wonderfully competent, quietly funny, and thoroughly likeable. The books have a classic whodunit structure and are very satisfying to read.
Several titles are available on Kindle Unlimited and they're very, very easy to get through in a sitting.
Best for: Readers who want a classic detective series without the darkness of modern crime fiction.
